Students at École Steffie Woima in Sylvan Lake, Alberta, are preparing for a month of books and prizes with the launch of the annual Shooting for the Stars! Read-a-Thon. The event will run from April 1 to April 30, 2026, to help children develop a love for reading while raising money for the school.
Participants will use weekly logs to track how many minutes they spend reading outside of class. For every 15 minutes a student reads, they earn one entry into a grand prize draw at the end of the month. Families can also count time spent reading to younger children toward their totals, and students who return their logs on Mondays will be entered into weekly prize draws.
Principal Angela Eadie-Gyori will host a special pizza party for the top five readers from each grade and the top three students who raise the most money. The school, which is part of the Chinook’s Edge School Division, has been serving the community since 1989 and offers both English and French Immersion classes for students from pre-kindergarten to grade 6.
Instead of asking for donations per minute, the school is asking for flat-rate pledges from friends and family. All pledge sheets and money must be turned in to the school office by Friday, May 1, 2026. To keep everyone safe, the school asks that students do not go door-to-door to ask for donations.
