Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Tecumseh, warning of 10 to 20 millimetres of rain tonight into Friday night, followed by a rapid temperature drop that could leave roads and sidewalks coated in ice.
Rain is expected to begin late tonight, saturating streets and pathways. A strong cold front will bring winds gusting 60 to 80 km/h and lake-effect flurries off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay, creating sudden whiteout conditions. Travel may become difficult at times and branches laden with ice could lead to localized power outages.
Town of Tecumseh Public Works crews are preparing to salt and sand main roads and monitor drainage systems. Residents are encouraged to clear snow and ice from sewer grates and culverts to prevent flooding from the initial rainfall, the town advisory said.
The Essex Region Conservation Authority is keeping an eye on watershed levels, as frozen or saturated ground can lead to ponding. Motorists are advised to check road conditions before heading out and limit travel during peak winds and the flash freeze transition.
