The County of Essex Council passed a new law on February 4, 2026, that introduces new building fees for all residential and business construction projects in Tecumseh, Ontario. These costs, often called development charges, are the first of their kind for the county and will help pay for regional services such as roads, ambulance services, and waste programs.

While the law is now active, the county will not begin collecting these fees from builders until January 1, 2028. The rates will be increased slowly over several years until 2031, when the final cost to build a single or semi-detached home will be $8,589. Business projects will also be charged approximately $46.50 per square metre.

In the Town of Tecumseh, these new county fees will be added to the building charges already collected by the town government. Currently, the town charges $33,916 to build a new house with full services, meaning the total upfront municipal cost for a new home will reach more than $42,500 once the county fees are fully implemented.

Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara supported the new fees, stating that the region faces an infrastructure backlog of more than $1 billion over the next 15 years. The money collected will be used for six specific areas, including road improvements, land purchases, and library services to support the growing community.

Residents or organizations who wish to challenge the new law have until Monday, March 16, 2026, to file a formal appeal. These appeals must be submitted to the Clerk of the County of Essex to be reviewed by the Ontario Land Tribunal.
