Families in Tecumseh can get help ensuring their children are safe on the road at a free car seat inspection event happening later this month. Kingsville Fire and Rescue Services is hosting the clinic on May 23, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at 985 Lesperance Road.
The event aims to teach parents and caregivers how to properly install car seats and provides expert tips to keep children secure. Appointments are required for the session and can be booked by calling 519-979-4041.
Properly using a child car seat is a critical safety measure, as Parachute Canada reports it can reduce the risk of injury by up to 82 per cent and the risk of death by up to 71 per cent. Despite these benefits, a Canadian study found that 81 per cent of car seats are either misused or improperly installed. CAA analysis indicates that a high percentage of infants, toddlers, and school-aged children were not in the appropriate restraint at the time of a crash.
In Ontario, drivers must follow specific rules under the Ministry of Transportation guidelines. Children under the age of 16 must wear a seatbelt, and children under the age of 8 must be properly secured in the correct car seat or booster seat. Failing to secure a child properly can result in a $240 fine and two demerit points on a driving record. The provincial requirements specify that children should use a rear-facing seat until at least 9 kg (20 lbs), a forward-facing seat until at least 18 kg (40 lbs), and a booster seat until they are 8 years old, weigh between 18 and 36 kg (40 and 80 lbs), or reach 145 cm in height.
For those unable to attend the clinic, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit also offers car seat installation and inspection services through certified technicians at the Safety Village.
