The Town of Tecumseh has updated its local rules regarding smoking and vaping to create a single, simplified by-law for the community. On May 12, 2026, the local council approved changes to consolidate existing regulations into one framework, ensuring they match provincial standards.
The updated By-law 2014-60 now incorporates rules that were previously spread across three different documents. By repealing two older by-laws, the town has streamlined its approach to regulating smoke and vapour on municipal property and at workplaces. These changes align local requirements with the Smoke-Free Ontario Act, 2017, which governs the consumption of tobacco, cannabis, and vapour products to protect the public from second-hand exposure.
As part of the update, the town has also amended its administrative penalty system to include specific fines for violating the consolidated smoking and vaping rules. Additionally, the municipality has revised its internal non-smoking policy to ensure staff and administration remain consistent with the new legal requirements and to provide clear guidance on how the rules are applied.
Since 2014, the town has maintained restrictions on smoking in several public areas, including parks, playgrounds, and recreational facilities. The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit continues to oversee the enforcement of these health-based regulations across the region.
