The Town of Tecumseh is working to resolve an environmental spill discovered in the Hurley Relief Branch Drain and Hurley Relief Drain systems. During routine monitoring, town staff identified an accumulation of an oily substance in the municipal drains, triggering an ongoing cleanup and investigation.
The situation was formally addressed during the Town of Tecumseh Council meeting on April 28, 2026. As of late April, the town has spent approximately $40,000 on cleanup and investigative efforts. Officials noted that contaminants are still entering the drains and work to address the spill remains in progress.
The municipality intends to recover all cleanup costs from the responsible party once they are identified. Under the Environmental Protection Act, the owner or controller of a spilled pollutant has a legal duty to clean up the site, and those responsible for environmental contamination can be held liable for the associated expenses.
