Residents in Tecumseh have until May 8, 2026, to provide their feedback on a proposed new Public Tree By-Law and Tree Canopy and Natural Vegetation Policy. The town administration made the draft documents available for public review on April 29, 2026, following a report presented to the Town of Tecumseh Council at their meeting on April 28, 2026.
Currently, the town manages its local greenery under a guidance document known as Policy No. 108. While this policy has directed tree planting and maintenance since its adoption in December 2020, it is not a legally enforceable rule. The proposed bylaw would change this, as the Municipal Act of 2001 allows towns to enact bylaws that include specific enforcement mechanisms and financial penalties for violations.
The introduction of this proposal comes as municipalities across Ontario evaluate the potential impact of provincial Bill 98. This proposed legislation, introduced by the province on March 30, 2026, has raised concerns among groups like Environmental Defence, who warn that it could limit the ability of local governments to enforce environmental standards and protect tree canopies.
The town remains active in its efforts to grow the local tree population through the Urban Forest Project. This program is moving forward with spring plantings along several streets, including West Lake Dr., Chornoby Cres., Calvary Ct., Hebert St., Corbi Ln., Maisonneuve St., and St. Anne St.
Comments on the draft bylaw and policy must be submitted through town channels by 4:00 pm on May 8, 2026.
