Residents in The Pas, Manitoba, are facing an increased risk of frostbite as wind gusts reached 50 kilometres per hour on February 16, 2026. According to Environment Canada, the actual temperature of minus 12.6 degrees is warmer than usual for this time of year, but the wind chill has dropped to minus 23.
The wind chill is forecast to reach minus 28 by Tuesday, February 17. The Government of Canada warns that at this level, frostbite can happen to exposed skin in as little as 10 to 30 minutes.
Local schools and transportation are currently operating as usual despite the wind. The Kelsey School Division only cancels its bus service if the wind chill reaches minus 45.
People working or spending time outdoors are encouraged to wear wind-resistant layers to stay safe. While the airport and local roads remain open, the high gusts can cause body heat to drop much faster than on a calm day.
