On April 1, 2026, residents in Three Rivers, Prince Edward Island, will start getting more money back for their empty drink containers as the province moves to a new recycling system. The change replaces the old way of only getting half of a deposit back with a new system that provides a full refund for every bottle and can returned.

This update is being managed by Encorp Atlantic, an organization that will now look after the province-wide beverage recycling program. People will still be able to take their empties to the same local recycling depots they have always used in the community.

Another benefit for shoppers is that these deposits will no longer be taxed at the checkout. Since the Government of Prince Edward Island is making the deposits fully refundable, they are no longer subject to sales tax, which simplifies the price people pay at the store.

The goal of the new rules is to encourage more people to recycle by making the process more rewarding and easier to understand. This transition brings the province in line with how many other parts of Canada handle recycling for beverage containers.
