Residents in Thunder Bay, Ontario, should prepare for a significant winter storm starting overnight on February 17, 2026, which is expected to bring up to 20 centimetres of snow and high winds. Environment Canada has issued a warning as gusts reaching 60 kilometres per hour will likely create blowing snow and poor visibility for drivers.

The heaviest snow will likely begin around 1:00 AM on Wednesday, February 18, with blowing snow conditions developing by 4:00 AM. The City of Thunder Bay will begin plowing priority routes, such as emergency and transit lines, at 2:00 AM once five centimetres of snow has fallen. To help residents see where crews are working, the city recently launched a live Snowplow Status Map.

Families should expect delays on school bus routes throughout the day. According to the Student Transportation Services of Thunder Bay, bus trips could take up to 50 percent longer than usual due to the weather and ongoing driver shortages.

For those needing a warm place to stay, community centres will be available. The PACE warming centre will be open from 7:30 AM to 9:00 PM during the storm. Officials recommend avoiding unnecessary travel while the storm is at its peak to ensure road crews can clear the streets safely.
