The Thunder Bay & District Injured Workers Support Group is holding its annual meeting tonight, March 19, 2026, at the Roots Community Food Centre in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The event runs from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM and offers a chance for community members to show support for workers who have been hurt on the job.
A major focus of the gathering is the Meredith Act, a new piece of proposed law that would replace the current provincial system for worker insurance. This new plan has already passed its first reading in the Ontario Legislature and aims to improve how the province handles support and benefits for injured employees.
The group is calling for an end to several current practices, such as stopping benefits once a worker turns 65. They are also speaking out against a rule known as “deeming,” where the insurance system treats an injured person as if they are working a job they do not actually have, which can lead to a drop in their financial support.
Participants will also discuss concerns regarding medical reviews by doctors who do not examine patients in person and instances where employers try to prevent workers from filing claims. In addition to these advocacy goals, the meeting will include the election of new board members for the non-profit organization.
