More than 2,000 homes and businesses in Thunder Bay, Ontario, have been without electricity for over 10 hours following a severe storm on February 16 and 17, 2026. This outage has caused significant disruptions as residents deal with freezing temperatures and a major winter weather system moving through the region.

The power loss has heavily impacted the Waterfront District, a busy area for local shops and tourism. The timing of the outage has also affected the SnowDay on the Waterfront festival, which is an annual winter event held in the district through February 22.

The local utility provider, Synergy North, has crews on the ground working to restore service despite the difficult conditions. According to the Synergy North outage map, the interruption began late Monday night and centered on the north end of the city and the downtown commercial hub.

Environment Canada issued a yellow warning for a winter storm on February 17, 2026. The forecast includes between 10 and 20 centimetres of snow and wind gusts that could reach up to 60 kilometres per hour, which may create further challenges for crews working to repair the electrical grid.
