Tillsonburg, Ontario, is seeing a change at its local hospital as the temporary 12-bed Transitional Care Unit at Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital winds down, with its last day of operation expected on September 1, 2026. The unit, which opened on April 1, 2025, was funded by the Ministry of Health to ease hospital overcrowding by caring for patients waiting for a spot in long-term care, a retirement home, or home with support.
Since it opened, the unit recorded 169 patient admissions. The decision to end the unit comes as a new 160-bed long-term care home, peopleCare Tillsonburg at 25 Maple Lane, opened this summer, giving local residents more care options.
Rural Roads Health Services, the hospital corporation that runs Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital and Alexandra Hospital in Ingersoll, confirmed the change. Over the coming weeks, the hospital will move those 12 beds to other patient care units, creating more private and semi-private rooms for people staying in the hospital.
The Ministry of Health put $1,648,718 into the Transitional Care Unit in the 2025-26 fiscal year and had set aside up to $824,359 for 2026-27. The unit was always meant to be temporary, with plans to close it once hospital flow improved and more long-term care beds were available locally.
For Tillsonburg-area residents, the closure means more long-term care options close to home and a better room setup for hospital patients. The change was noted by Ernie Hardeman, MPP for Oxford, and Nadia Facca, President and CEO of Rural Roads Health Services.
