The Timmins Wado Kai Karate Club is hosting its annual regional tournament on Saturday, January 31, 2026, at 301 Shirley Street North (École Renaissance gymnasium) in Timmins, Ontario. The event is open to both competitors and spectators.

Doors open for the public at 8:30 a.m., with a Black Belt meeting at 9:30 a.m., and the competition beginning at 10:00 a.m. Athletes across age categories—from Pee Wee divisions (young children) through Senior Black Belt—will compete in events including kata (forms) and kumite (sparring).

The event is held in affiliation with the Shintani Wado Kai Karate Federation (SWKKF), a national Shintani organization based in Canada (headquartered in St. Catharines, Ontario). In addition to standard Wado Kai karate events, the tournament will include Shindo competition, the short-staff discipline developed to complement Wado Kai techniques.

Local organizers are working with Sport for Kids Timmins programs and partners to help more children participate in the sport and to support youth access to lessons and equipment. The tournament also serves as a regional qualifying and development platform for SWKKF clinics and national team selection pathways.

Sensei Bill Spinney leads the Timmins Wado Kai club, continuing a multi-generational family legacy that traces back to the club’s founder, Sensei Willie. The club has served the Timmins community for decades (recognized in local records as having more than 35 years of activity), focusing on youth development, discipline, balance and coordination.
