Environment Canada has issued a blizzard warning for the Tuktoyaktuk – East Channel Region, as severe weather is expected to cause near-zero visibility and dangerous travel starting Friday morning, March 20, 2026.
The blizzard is forecast to continue through Saturday, March 21, 2026. Northwest winds gusting to 50 km/h on Friday morning are expected to become west winds of 50 km/h with gusts reaching 70 km/h near noon. The heavy blowing snow will make it very difficult for anyone to see while driving or walking outdoors.
Extremely cold temperatures are accompanying the wind, with wind chill values expected to reach near -49°C. Residents are being warned that frostbite can occur in minutes at these levels and are advised to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until the storm passes.
Safety guidance for the community suggests that anyone who becomes lost or stranded in the storm should stay where they are until the weather clears. Officials will continue to monitor the situation while the blizzard conditions persist throughout the region.
