Skiers and snowboarders in Watson Lake, Yukon, are being told to prepare for extreme cold as temperatures are expected to drop significantly this week. The forecast shows the mercury falling as low as -33°C at Mount Maichen by Friday, March 13, 2026.

The local ski hill is located eight kilometres from town and features two lifts with nine kilometres of slopes. Because of the extreme northern cold, there is a higher risk of frostbite and potential mechanical issues with the machinery on site.

Management at the hill typically runs on limited hours during the week and may make further changes based on the weather. Residents should check if the facility is open before they head out to ensure safety standards are being met during the cold snap.

Environment Canada data indicates that these frigid conditions will persist throughout the coming week. Visitors are encouraged to wear proper winter gear and stay informed about any updates to the hill’s operating status.
