Watson Lake, Yukon, faced dangerous conditions on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as temperatures dropped to nearly minus 40 degrees Celsius. According to Environment Canada, the official reading at the Watson Lake Airport reached minus 39.8 degrees Celsius at 5:00 AM.

This morning’s reading is one of the coldest recorded in recent weeks and is much lower than the typical weather for Watson Lake. While the average overnight low for February usually stays between minus 19 and minus 27 degrees, this latest drop is a significant change from the norm.

At temperatures this low, frostbite can develop on exposed skin in less than 10 minutes. Local authorities recommend that residents check their home heating systems and vehicle heaters to avoid problems like frozen pipes or failing batteries.

The freezing weather also affects travel at the Watson Lake Airport, which operates 24 hours a day. The extreme cold can make it difficult for small airplanes to fly and creates challenges for crews working to keep the runway and surrounding areas clear of snow.

Forecasts from The Weather Network show the extreme cold will likely continue for about 48 hours. Temperatures are expected to begin a slow climb back to more typical winter levels later in the week.
