Yukon University is hosting a two-day workshop in Watson Lake, Yukon, to teach residents how to help people who may be thinking about suicide. The training is scheduled to begin on April 1, 2026, at the university’s local campus.

The Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training workshop is an interactive program that focuses on suicide first aid. It teaches participants how to recognize when someone is in distress and how to work with them to create a plan for their immediate safety.

This program does not require any formal medical background or previous healthcare experience to attend. It is open to any community member, volunteer, or service provider who is 16 years of age or older.

Instructors Erin Legault and Meg Grudeski will lead the training sessions for the community. The workshop aims to build local support for mental health and individual safety within Watson Lake and the Liard First Nation community.
