Drivers in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, will notice traffic changes on 3rd Street NE as construction continues on the city’s new movie theatre. The City of Weyburn Public Works advises the block of 3rd Street NE between Souris Avenue and Coteau Avenue will be closed or reduced to one lane from February 2 until February 16, 2026.

The closure is to allow the Weyburn Theatre Community Service Cooperative to move heavy equipment and materials safely onto the building site. Only local traffic will be permitted to enter the block; other drivers are asked to use alternate routes across town.

The construction is a key part of the plan to bring first-run movies back to the community — the cooperative says the project will return a permanent theatre to downtown for the first time since 2017 (about nine years). The new building, titled the Credit Union Spark Cinema, is being built on the former site of the Soo Theatre.

While the road is restricted, nearby shops and businesses remain open to customers. The work during this window is expected to include exterior finishing and utility hookups (water and power) as crews complete the building.
