Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued an Extreme Cold Warning for Whitby, Ontario, as a blast of Arctic air is expected to drive wind chill values down to −30°C this weekend. The warning is in effect Saturday, Feb. 7 and into the morning of Sunday, Feb. 8, 2026; the coldest periods are forecast between midnight and 8:00 a.m.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, at wind chill values near −30°C exposed skin can develop frostbite in under 10 minutes. People near the Port Whitby waterfront may also see localized “sea smoke” (steam fog) or freezing spray coming off Lake Ontario because the lake water remains relatively warmer than the air. Those conditions can reduce visibility and cause rapid ice buildup on docks and vessels.

The Durham Region Health Department has activated its Cold Weather Response protocol to help residents during the deep freeze. The Town of Whitby is urging people to check on vulnerable neighbours and pets, and municipal and regional partners are making warming centres available (for example, municipal library spaces and community centres in Whitby).

Health officials advise watching for signs of frostbite — pain, tingling or numbness, and skin that may turn white or greyish-yellow or feel firm or waxy — and to seek shelter and medical attention if symptoms appear. The Region of Durham maintains an updated list of emergency shelters and warming locations for those who need a warm place to stay.
