On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Environment Canada issued a gale warning for the Western Lake Ontario area, which includes Port Whitby, Ontario. This warning is used when officials expect very strong winds that could be dangerous for boats and people near the water.

Winds are forecast to increase to 35 knots, which is about 65 kilometres per hour, around midnight tonight. The weather will also include rain and a risk of thunderstorms before changing to light snow flurries as the weather system moves through the region overnight.

Waves are expected to grow significantly, causing choppy conditions and spray to blow onto local docks and piers. Small boat operators are advised to stay off the lake and keep their vessels secured until the storm passes.

Residents and workers near the shoreline should be extra careful as the high waves can make docks slippery and dangerous. The wind is expected to slow down by Thursday morning, though conditions will remain breezy as the weather clears.
