At its Durham GTA campus, located on the Oshawa–Whitby border, Trent University released its year-in-review feature “2025: The Year That Took Trent There” on December 18, 2025, highlighting a transformative year for the Thornton Road site. The piece outlines record enrolment, new research initiatives and the campus’s growing role in local economic and student life, offering residents and prospective students a clear view of the university’s recent milestones and direction.

The campus exceeded 2,500 students in 2025, building on the 2020 opening of a six‑storey residence and academic building. Since then, Trent has formally added experiential learning streams in business, communications and criminology, placing students in co‑op positions with local Whitby and Oshawa employers. The first resident cohort of 200+ beds has boosted on‑campus life and helped retain more young adults in the region.

Support from the Region of Durham included a $1.42‑million gift toward the campus expansion; this growth aligns with Trent’s 2020–2025 Strategic Mandate Agreement, which emphasized career‑ready social sciences and humanities programs. In early 2025, Durham Region was named Intelligent Community of the Year, and Trent’s ‘Teaching City’ research projects with Ontario Tech and Durham College were cited as a contributing factor in that recognition.

“The expansion cements the university’s long-term plans for strategic program development and growth in the Greater Toronto Area,” said Dr. Scott Henderson, Vice‑President and Head, Trent University Durham GTA. The Trent Durham Student Association (TDSA) has advocated for more on‑campus services to match the rising residential population, and local industry partners are hosting students in logistics and supply chain roles to address shifting regional needs.

By consolidating these successes in a single feature, Trent aims to become the first choice for students in Whitby and beyond, reducing the flow of graduates to Toronto. The year‑end review sets the stage for Trent’s 2026–2030 strategic cycle and offers local stakeholders a roadmap of the campus’s expanding role in community and economic development.
