The Town of Whitby has reached a significant branding and construction milestone for its new multi-use recreational hub in Brooklin. On December 1, 2025, Whitby Council officially finalized a ten-year, $1.5 million naming-rights agreement with prominent homebuilder Fieldgate Homes. The $155 million facility, rising on the west side of Baldwin Street South just south of Highway 407, will now be officially known as the Fieldgate Sports Complex.

The project is a flagship for the Town’s environmental commitments, designed to be one of the first multi-purpose recreation facilities in Canada to pursue both LEED Gold and Zero Carbon Building (ZCB) Design certifications from the Canada Green Building Council. By targeting these standards, the complex aims to eliminate fossil-fuel heating and rely on on-site renewable energy. A federal investment of $25 million from the Green and Inclusive Community Buildings (GICB) program has been instrumental in offsetting the capital costs associated with these low-carbon mechanical systems.

Facility Amenities and Naming Honors

The 160,000-square-foot facility is designed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing community with a focus on inclusivity and scale. Key indoor features include:

  • Aquatics Centre: Home to what is described as the largest pool in Durham Region.

  • Twin-Pad Arena: Featuring two 85′ by 190′ ice pads, with concrete slabs successfully poured in early 2025.

  • Double Gymnasium: Including a three-lane indoor walking track and wellness studio.

The surrounding 13-acre outdoor space has been officially named Roybrook Park in recognition of a 2006 land donation by the Ormiston family. The park will feature Whitby’s first multi-purpose artificial turf field (named Roybrook Field), alongside lit pickleball, tennis, and basketball courts, a skatepark, and a pump track. Inside the complex, a multi-purpose room will be named the Mitchell Room to honor the family history of the land upon which the complex is built.

Construction Status and Environmental Impact

As of December 2025, construction is progressing toward a targeted opening in 2026. Recent work has focused on the building’s “envelope,” including the installation of metal paneling, glass, and stonework, as well as the interior finishing of the pool systems and arena infrastructure.

The move toward net-zero operational carbon involves complex technical choices, particularly for the ice plant and pool systems, which traditionally rely on high-emission refrigerants. By adhering to the ZCB standard, the Town is required to account for all operational carbon and refrigerant leaks, ensuring the facility contributes to the “Zero Carbon Whitby” goal of reducing municipal greenhouse gas emissions.
