Environment and Climate Change Canada canceled an Orange-level winter storm warning for Whitby, Ontario, on the morning of Monday, January 26, 2026, after a predicted heavy snow band shifted away from the shoreline. The warning was downgraded to a forecast of flurries and localized blowing snow, providing a reprieve for local commuters and school boards that had been preparing for much worse conditions.

ECCC forecasters said a change in wind trajectory over Lake Ontario reduced the “fetch” — the distance winds travel over open water that feeds lake-effect snow — which prevented a sustained snow squall from reaching the Durham shoreline.

GO Transit’s Lakeshore East line has resumed regular service and many local transit services reported normal operations. The Durham District School Board (DDSB) kept schools open following the early-morning forecast update. The Town of Whitby said its crews remain active, treating icy patches and clearing blowing snow near the lake.

Residents should still prepare for gusty winds and biting wind chills: Environment Canada’s local forecast showed wind chills as low as about −25°C in the morning and around −18°C in the afternoon. Drivers on Highway 401 and commuters at the Whitby GO Station are advised to dress warmly and stay alert for quickly changing visibility near the waterfront.
