The Barrhead Composite High School junior high girls basketball team, the Jaguars, took the gold medal at a tournament in Whitecourt, Alberta. On the weekend of January 16–17, 2026, the Jaguars won all three games, preserving their perfect season record at 11–0.
The gold-medal game against host Whitecourt St. Joseph was a close match that ended 37–35. According to TownAndCountryToday, every player on the Barrhead roster reached the score sheet during the three games that weekend. “It was a back-and-forth game all the way through. We had a tough time against their zone defence, but preserved and won a nail-biter,” coach Colin Erickson said.
Before the final, the Jaguars beat Drayton Valley’s Frank Maddock High School 41–16 and Evansburg’s Grand Trunk High School 48–21. The team is coached by Colin Erickson and Warren Warehime, with former BCHS principal Kerry McElroy also on the coaching staff. McElroy said the podium finish was a true team effort and noted that every player contributed to the scoring over the weekend.
The Jaguars are now preparing for the Division Championship on Feb. 19, 2026, in Westlock, with the Zone Championships scheduled for March 6–7, 2026. While the “Jaguars” name is used across Barrhead sports, including minor hockey, the immediate focus is on the junior high basketball program’s run toward a potential championship.
