The Whitecourt RCMP will increase patrols throughout Whitecourt, Alberta, from February 1 to February 7, 2026, as part of Operation Cold Start to help stop vehicle thefts. This community safety effort focuses on preventing thefts that occur when vehicles are left running and unattended during cold weather. Police will be checking residential streets, parking lots and other locations where vehicles are left idling to ensure vehicles are secure.

Local police and the Town of Whitecourt are taking action following a 26 per cent increase in vehicle thefts compared to 2024. Many of these crimes happen when owners leave their cars idling to warm up with the keys inside. Alberta RCMP say roughly one-quarter of stolen vehicles in the province are taken while they are running with the keys available.

Local reporting and RCMP releases say the goal of these patrols is educational. Officers will attempt to contact the registered owner if they find an unattended, idling vehicle; if contact cannot be made they may leave an information pamphlet on the vehicle outlining prevention tips. Residents are encouraged to stay with their cars while they warm up or use remote starters that keep the doors locked.

The initiative is part of a province-wide push by the Alberta RCMP to reduce auto theft during the winter. Police warn that stolen cars are often used by criminals to commit other offences, such as break-ins or dangerous driving. By keeping keys and valuables out of sight, residents can help make the community less of a target for thieves.
