Residents in Whitecourt, Alberta can learn to paint the aurora borealis at a special guided art session, Under the Dancing Lights, on Thursday, January 29, 2026, hosted by Evermore Artistry (5116 50th St, Whitecourt). The event follows a powerful G4-class geomagnetic storm on January 19–20, 2026 that produced unusually widespread aurora displays across the region.
The evening is designed for people of all skill levels — no previous experience with a brush is required. Instructors will lead participants through a fully guided acrylic-painting lesson, demonstrating blending techniques to recreate the glowing green and purple lights of the aurora on canvas.
The downtown studio session is a 2.5- to 3-hour class and includes all necessary supplies, such as canvases, brushes and aprons. The theme and timing were chosen in response to the recent historic aurora displays on Jan. 19–20, which media outlets including Space.com reported pushed the northern lights much farther south than usual.
According to Evermore Artistry’s event information, doors typically open at 6:30 p.m., with instruction beginning at 7:00 p.m. Organizers say registration is filling rapidly as local interest in aurora-themed activities remains high.
Local leaders have noted a boost in creative programming as work continues on the town’s new Culture & Events Centre. For more on recent community happenings, see coverage in the Whitecourt Star.
