Drivers on Highway 24 in the South Cariboo should expect delays as crews perform utility maintenance on the stretch between Sheridan Lake Road West and Horse Lake Road near Lone Butte.
The BC Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI) has reduced the highway to single‑lane alternating traffic between Sheridan Lake Road West and Horse Lake Road. Work is taking place daily from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and is expected to be completed by the end of the day on February 10, 2026.
Flaggers and temporary signage are in place to manage traffic. DriveBC is advising drivers travelling between Lone Butte and 100 Mile House to allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes for their trip while alternating traffic is in effect.
The lane closures affect a key east–west route used by logging trucks and local residents travelling between major highways, according to DriveBC. Dawson Road Maintenance is the highway maintenance contractor for Service Area 16 (South Cariboo); MoTI utility crews are reported to be carrying out the utility work. The ministry has described the job only as ‘utility maintenance’ and has not publicly confirmed which specific systems are being upgraded — work in this corridor commonly involves power lines or fibre‑optic equipment, but that detail remains unconfirmed for this particular project.
Known locally as the ‘Fishing Highway,’ Highway 24 is an important link for resorts and residents in the Interlakes area and serves as an alternate route when other major roads are closed. TranBC information on winter maintenance notes that conducting preventative and winter work helps reduce the risk of larger disruptions during busier travel seasons.
