St. Mary’s Parish Ukrainian Catholic Cultural Centre in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, will host Malanka 2026 on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Malanka — the traditional Ukrainian “Old New Year” celebrated according to the Julian calendar — is a public festival featuring traditional music, high-energy folk dancing and community feasting.
Guests can expect performances by local dancers and a communal meal featuring traditional dishes such as perogies and cabbage rolls. The event is a major cultural gathering in Yorkton, where about 31% of residents reported Ukrainian ethnic origin in the 2021 Census (Statistics Canada).
Malanka follows the Julian calendar and traditionally marks the end of the holiday season; Yorkton has a long history with these traditions, dating to 1897 when one of the first Ukrainian colonies in the area was established.
The celebration takes place in the Cultural Centre’s large banquet hall at 240 Wellington Avenue, a 10,000-square-foot facility that serves as a hub for the local Ukrainian Catholic community. Organizers say the yearly tradition helps preserve local customs while welcoming neighbours for a night of music and community bonding.
