The City of Yorkton has issued a total fire ban effective May 13, 2026, due to elevated wildfire risks in the region. The city-wide measure prohibits the use of outdoor fire pits, tiki torches, fireworks, firecrackers, sky lanterns, burning barrels, and burning cages of any size.
According to Fire Protective Services, this decision is based on current weather conditions, which have created high to extreme fire risk throughout southern Saskatchewan. Dry, windy weather combined with low soil moisture has prompted a coordinated response, with three nearby rural municipalities also implementing similar fire bans.
While the restrictions are comprehensive, residents may still use barbecues that run on natural gas, propane, or briquettes. Fire Chief Trevor Morrissey, who recently presented an updated emergency response plan to city council, emphasized that these safety measures will remain in place until further notice.
The timing of the ban arrives just before the Victoria Day long weekend, a period typically marked by increased outdoor gatherings. The public is reminded that these precautions are necessary following a severe 2025 wildfire season, which saw 2.9 million hectares burned and over 450 dwellings destroyed across the province, as reported by the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency.
