Residents in the Yorkton area should prepare for an increased risk of flooding this spring as a result of well-above-normal snow levels. According to the Water Security Agency, which monitors the province’s water supply and flood risks, areas to the north of Yorkton and Wynyard are expected to experience significantly higher runoff than usual.
The agency’s latest update, released on April 17, 2026, follows manual snow surveys conducted at 12 sites across the province on April 9 and 10. While snowmelt is already finishing up in areas south of Yorkton, cold weather has caused a buildup of snowpack to the north that is well above what is normally seen at this time of year.
Shawn Jaques, president and CEO of the Water Security Agency, said the potential for localized flooding in the Yorkton region depends largely on how quickly the current snowpack melts. He noted that if a delayed melt is followed by a sudden rise in temperatures, the rapid release of water could lead to flooding issues.
The Quill Lakes Basin, situated near Yorkton, is also flagged to receive above-normal runoff because of the high levels of snow recorded during the April surveys. The agency continues to monitor conditions throughout the region as the spring thaw progresses.
