The Government of Saskatchewan and SaskPower released a new plan on February 23, 2026, to improve the power system in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. This work aims to prevent large blackouts and provide enough electricity for local businesses to grow.
The project follows a major power failure on January 15, 2026, that left 14,500 residents in the area without electricity. The new strategy focuses on making power lines stronger so they can better handle extreme weather and wind damage.
A key part of the work is the Regina Area Southeast Reinforcement Project, which is designed to make the electricity supply more stable for the Yorkton region. Crews are also building new power lines to connect the province to a power network in the United States by 2027 to increase the total amount of available electricity.
Local residents can expect some short, planned outages while workers replace old equipment near the city. For instance, a maintenance outage took place on February 19, 2026, for customers in Willowbrook and rural areas west of Yorkton.
The plan also includes connecting northern and southern power systems for the first time to help the mining industry. These upgrades are expected to create work for local construction and maintenance companies in the community.
