High school athletes in Norway House, Manitoba, are beginning preparations for the Dairy Farmers of Manitoba Provincial Track & Field Championships, which will run from June 11 to June 13, 2026. These dates are important for students at the Helen Betty Osborne Ininiw Education Resource Centre because they allow families and coaches to start the travel planning and fundraising needed for the 800-kilometre trip to the competition.
The 2026 event is a significant opportunity for local runners and throwers after the 2025 championships were cancelled. According to the Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association, the previous year’s event was called off because of safety concerns regarding hazardous air quality caused by wildfire smoke.
Athletes from Wanipigow School, known as the Stingers, are also expected to participate in the provincial meet. Both schools are part of the Frontier School Division, which represents remote communities across Manitoba.
For many senior students at the Helen Betty Osborne Ininiw Education Resource Centre, this will be their final chance to compete at the provincial level. The early confirmation of the June dates helps the school and the Norway House Cree Nation coordinate the logistics required to support their athletes on the provincial stage.
