The District School Board Ontario North East is preparing to recognize International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, with a focus on student-led projects in Cochrane, Ontario. The event highlights local leadership and global efforts to promote fairness and support for women and girls.
Summer Nickoshie, a student from École Secondaire Cochrane High School, is helping lead these efforts as a student trustee for the 2025–2026 school year. Her role allows Cochrane students to help shape how their schools celebrate, including planning classroom activities and school-wide assemblies at the high school and Cochrane Public School.
This year, the international community is using the theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls.” The school board is also encouraging participation in the official campaign known as “Give To Gain,” which focuses on the positive impact of community support and gender equity.
Because March 8, 2026, falls on a Sunday, local schools will host many of these activities during the week leading up to the date. These celebrations also coincide with Social Work Week, which runs from March 2 to March 8, 2026, focusing on community support and social justice.
Families in Cochrane can look for invitations to school events or digital toolkits to follow along with what students are learning. These materials will highlight the achievements of historical figures as well as local women leaders from across Northeastern Ontario.
