The City of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, is preparing to start construction on a new $72 million aquatics centre this spring. Final blueprints for the facility are expected to be finished by March 31, 2026, to allow for more swimming and lesson space in the community.
The new facility will be built as an addition to the Dow Centennial Centre. It will feature a 10-lane lap pool, a leisure pool, water slides, and a lazy river.
To make room for the expansion, the ATB Wellness Studio inside the centre will be turned into a new lobby. All fitness equipment and programs from that studio will be moved to other parts of the building to keep them available for residents during the work.
The project is being funded through a $66.6 million loan and a $4.1 million USD contribution from Dow. This investment aims to double the amount of swimming lessons the city can offer each year.
Swimmers can continue to use the current Harbour Pool while the new building is under construction. The City of Fort Saskatchewan plans to keep the old pool open until the new facility is officially ready for use.
