The City of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, has selected a design and construction team to lead the creation of the new Helmuth Ritter Fire Station. This facility will serve as the city’s second fire station and will be built on Southridge Boulevard to improve emergency response times for neighborhoods in the south.
The design team is currently reviewing the project plans and total costs before presenting them to local officials later in 2026. Earlier estimates suggested the total cost for the station would be between $19.8 million and $22 million, with about $2.1 million already spent on the initial planning and design work.
The station is named in honour of Helmuth Ritter, a firefighter who served the community for more than 50 years before he passed away in November 2024. The building will be located next to the Heartland Ford dealership to help local emergency services keep up with the city’s expanding residential and business areas.
If the budget is approved later this year, construction on the new facility is expected to begin in early 2027. The project was first identified as a necessity in the 2023 Fire Services Master Plan to ensure safety standards remain high as the city’s population surpasses 30,000 people.
