Banff Town Council will hold a public hearing on March 10, 2026, to hear from the community about proposed updates to local property and safety rules in Banff, Alberta. The changes aim to make the town safer by introducing new requirements for how residents maintain their yards and manage noise.
Under the new rules, homeowners would be required to remove flammable materials like long grass and dead trees within 10 metres of any building to reduce the risk of wildfires. The Banff Town Council is also considering a rule that would require people to remove fruit trees, such as crabapples, if they are found to be attracting bears into residential neighbourhoods.
The proposal includes stricter limits on noise from construction and sidewalk performances, along with higher fines for those who do not follow the standards. These updates were initially supported by the Town of Banff leadership during a preliminary vote in December 2025.
The upcoming meeting is the formal opportunity for residents and business owners to provide feedback before the rules are officially changed. Local leaders say the goal is to balance the needs of the community with the unique challenges of living in a mountain environment.
