The Owen Sound Waste Watchers, a local group dedicated to protecting the environment, will end its operations on April 30, 2026. The non-profit organization has spent years advocating for waste reduction and sustainability throughout Owen Sound, Ontario.
The group has worked closely with the City of Owen Sound and the Tom Thomson Art Gallery on various community projects. As recently as January 13, 2026, the volunteers were active partners for the Upcycle TOM event, which teaches residents how to turn waste into art.
Throughout its history, the organization led initiatives like cigarette waste collection pilots and educational programs at Hillcrest Elementary School. The group, which is also part of the Canada Reduces network, often participated in national campaigns to clean up litter in local neighbourhoods.
The closure of the organization removes a major grassroots voice for local environmental efforts. Residents who follow these initiatives will need to look for other community organizations to support sustainability goals once the group finishes its work at the end of April.
