An officer with the Owen Sound Police Service was sent to the hospital after being bitten by a dog during an impaired driving arrest on March 8, 2026. The incident occurred in the 1900 block of 17th Street East in Owen Sound, after police received reports of a person driving erratically on 16th Street East.
While officers were in the process of making the arrest, a dog that was inside the suspect’s truck attacked one of the officers. The animal bit the officer multiple times before a second officer intervened to help their colleague.
After the dog released the first officer, it then charged toward a third officer in an aggressive manner. Fearing for their safety, that officer used their service pistol to stop the animal, resulting in the dog’s death.
The injured officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment of the bite wounds and has since been released. No other injuries were reported during the encounter.
The driver, an Owen Sound resident, faces charges of impaired driving and operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit. The individual is set to appear in court in Owen Sound on April 16, 2026.
