Residents in Whitby, Ontario, should prepare for significant rainfall and potential flooding as a series of storms move through the area on March 10 and March 11, 2026. The incoming weather is expected to bring a large amount of water to the community over a short period.
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement forecasting between 20 to 40 mm of rain over the next two days. Some neighborhoods might see even higher amounts of water if thunderstorms develop during the storms.
The weather agency warns that heavy downpours could lead to flash floods and water pooling on local roads. There is also a high risk of flooding in low-lying areas that typically struggle with drainage during heavy rain.
Because the ground is currently frozen or soaked from recent spring weather, it has very little ability to absorb the incoming rainfall. This lack of natural drainage makes sudden flooding more likely on municipal streets and in residential yards.
The Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority is the local agency responsible for flood forecasting and watershed safety. Residents are encouraged to monitor local updates and stay away from waterways as the rain continues through Wednesday.
