An 18-year-old Whitby man has been charged with impaired driving and other offences after a violent rollover crash on Myrtle Road West in May left four teenagers injured, with two of them thrown from the vehicle.
Durham Regional Police say Alexander Burgi was arrested on August 13, 2026, following a nearly three-month investigation into the May 28 collision near Duffs Road.
The crash happened around 5:30 a.m. when a Toyota RAV4 travelling eastbound on Myrtle Road West lost control, left the road, and flipped. At least two occupants were ejected, including a 16-year-old girl who was found about 100 feet from the wreckage. She was airlifted to a Toronto-area trauma centre with serious injuries. An 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old man were also transported to a Toronto-area trauma centre with serious injuries. A 14-year-old boy suffered minor injuries.
Burgi, who was also injured, faces charges of dangerous operation causing bodily harm, impaired operation causing bodily harm, impaired operation exceeding the legal limit, stunt driving, taking a vehicle without consent, and driving as a G1 licence holder with blood alcohol above zero and without a qualified supervisor.
Police continue to ask anyone with dash cam or surveillance footage from the area that morning to contact D/Cst. Lan of the Collision Investigation Unit. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Durham Regional Crime Stoppers.
