Families from Sandy Bay, Manitoba, can get help finding records related to residential schools during an information session in Winnipeg on March 11, 2026. The Southern Chiefs’ Organization is hosting the event to support survivors and their descendants as they look for family history and official documents.
The session will take place at the Turtle Island Neighbourhood Centre at 510 King Street from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. This event is part of a larger research project to help people navigate the process of requesting records from government archives, churches, and universities.
Staff will be on hand to help people fill out claim forms for the Federal Indian Hospital Settlement. They will also provide guidance on how to find information about children who attended residential schools, day schools, Indian hospitals, and tuberculosis sanatoriums.
The Southern Chiefs’ Organization represents 34 First Nations in southern Manitoba, including the Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation. Grand Chief Jerry Daniels and the organization are working to help citizens overcome the paperwork and barriers often faced when trying to access these historical documents.
Participants can learn how to access records from institutions like Archives Canada, Vital Statistics, and the Hudson’s Bay Company Archives. The goal of the event is to provide direct support to those seeking the truth about their family’s past.
