Residents in Steinbach, Manitoba, are facing difficult travel conditions and extreme cold today, March 17, 2026, as a winter weather system moves through the area. According to Environment Canada, the community is expected to receive 5 centimetres of snow along with strong winds throughout the day.
The weather agency reported that winds are increasing to 40 kilometres per hour this morning, with gusts reaching up to 60 kilometres per hour. These high winds are causing blowing snow, which can make it much harder for drivers to see clearly while out on the roads.
Extreme cold is also a major concern for the region, with the wind chill hitting -31 this morning and expected to stay around -19 this afternoon. Officials warned there is a steady risk of frostbite for anyone spending time outdoors during these conditions.
While the total snowfall is relatively low, the combination of wind and freezing temperatures will continue to impact the community for most of the day. Conditions are expected to improve tonight as the snow stops and temperatures begin to rise toward more seasonal levels by Wednesday.
