Councillor Damian Kowalewich is resigning from his seat on the council in View Royal, British Columbia, effective March 31, 2026.
The Town of View Royal announced the move this week, explaining that Kowalewich is leaving to focus on his new role as Deputy Chief of the Saanich Police Department. He has served as a councillor since 2017 and previously won re-election bids in 2018 and 2022.
Because the resignation is happening during an election year, the town will not hold a special by-election to fill the empty seat. Under provincial rules, council can leave a position vacant if the member leaves after January 1 of a general election year.
The council seat will remain empty until the next local election on October 17, 2026. Local officials noted that town operations and the 2026 budget process will continue as planned without disruption.
