Seniors in Oshawa, Ontario, can join a free online conversation on March 26, 2026, with award-winning author Joanna Cockerline. The event, part of the Creative Aging: Books and Ideas series, is hosted by Oshawa Public Libraries and will take place at 2:00 PM on the Zoom video platform.
Cockerline will read from her novel titled Still, which tells the story of an 18-year-old girl living on the streets of Kelowna. The book was recognized on the longlist for the 2025 Giller Prize and follows the main character’s search for a missing friend while exploring themes of survival and resilience.
Aside from being an author, Cockerline is a lecturer at the University of British Columbia Okanagan and has spent years volunteering to help people who are unhoused. She even helped start a group that supports people living on the streets, which allowed her to write about these real-life issues with care and experience.
This monthly series is organized in partnership with Art Your Service, a group that provides online classes and activities for thousands of seniors across Canada. Residents who want to attend must register ahead of time through the library website to receive the link for the video meeting.
The library will continue this program for older adults through the spring of 2026. Future sessions are set to feature other Canadian writers, including Tara Gereaux on April 30 and Dini Petty on May 28.
