The City of Steinbach, Manitoba, will start its annual spring road weight limits on March 25, 2026, to protect local streets from damage as the ground thaws. Starting at 6:00 a.m., all city streets will be limited to either 65 per cent or 90 per cent of their normal weight capacity.
These rules are a standard practice across the province to stop heavy trucks from breaking up pavement while the frost is leaving the ground. The city typically keeps these limits in place until around the May long weekend, though the exact timing depends on the weather.
For 2026, the city will only grant special permit requests based on current weather and ground conditions. No permits are expected to be handed out during the final two to three weeks of the season. Drivers and dispatchers are responsible for following these rules and can check a road restriction map on the city website to plan their routes.
A By-Law Enforcement Officer will monitor truck activity and issue fines to anyone breaking the rules. Under the Traffic By-Law, fines are set at $25 for every 50 kilograms over the limit, with an extra $200 surcharge if the ticket is paid more than 15 days late.
