The Pembroke Public Library in Pembroke, Ontario, started a new service on March 22, 2026, that allows members to borrow tablets for free. Residents can now check out a device for up to three weeks to help with schoolwork, job applications, or keeping in touch with family.
The program is specifically designed for people who do not own a computer or tablet. Members can pick up a device at the library front desk at 237 Victoria St. or call the branch to make arrangements. This new service adds to the existing digital tools at the library, which already include free Wi-Fi and public computer access.
The City of Pembroke serves as a central hub for the Ottawa Valley and is home to about 14,364 people. These types of borrowing programs are becoming a standard way for libraries to ensure everyone in the community has fair access to technology, regardless of their income.
According to Library Impact Ontario, many households still lack high-speed internet or modern devices at home. The library branch, which has operated out of its historic building since 1914, also provides digital books and databases to help bridge this gap for local residents.
The library is open for tablet pickups Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Borrowers must be members of the library to participate in the program.
