The Town of Banff, Alberta, closed the intersection of Lynx Street and Caribou Street on March 20, 2026, to resume work on a major road and utility project. The closure is part of a $6.8 million effort to replace water and sewer pipes that are 100 years old. This work originally began in the fall of 2025 and is expected to be completed by the summer or fall of 2026.
The closed intersection is located adjacent to the Banff Park Lodge and sits at the western end of a construction zone that extends toward the Canada House Gallery. Drivers who usually enter town from Norquay Road are being directed to use Banff Avenue as an alternate route. Access to the downtown area remains open, but motorists should expect detours near the construction zone.
According to the Caribou Street Reconstruction project details, the work will also make the area safer for pedestrians. The town plans to realign the intersection to shorten crosswalks and make people more visible to drivers. These safety improvements are being completed alongside the underground pipe replacements.
The Caribou Street area is a primary hub for local restaurants and shops and serves as the gateway to the Bear Street business district. All businesses along the street will stay open for customers throughout the construction period. The project remains on schedule and on budget as crews work toward a final completion date later this year.
