On March 25, 2026, Fort William First Nation author Nolan Schmerk is launching his first children’s book at the Waverley Library in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. and offers local families a chance to meet the author and hear him read from his new work.
The book, titled Microphone Melody, is described as a vibrant story about finding your own voice and the power of music. Schmerk, who is also a songwriter and filmmaker from Fort William First Nation, previously won a regional writing competition in 2023 and has released several musical projects under the name Solomon.
This presentation is part of the Indigenous Author Series hosted by the Thunder Bay Public Library. The series is supported by the K.M. Hunter Charitable Foundation and aims to highlight the stories and recent books of Indigenous writers.
The launch is being held at the Waverley Library, which is home to the city’s first Indigenous Knowledge Centre. This centre was established in 2018 to provide the community with better access to books and resources about Indigenous history and culture.
While the event is free to attend, the library requires residents to register in advance to secure a seat. Schmerk often works with local youth through hip-hop workshops at the library where he teaches beat-making and songwriting.
