Community members will gather at the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre in Opaskwayak Cree Nation on March 29, 2026, to honour the life of former Member of the Legislative Assembly Amanda Lathlin. Lathlin, who represented the The Pas-Kameesak region for over a decade, died on March 21, 2026, at the age of 49 after a period of illness.
According to the Government of Manitoba, flags at provincial buildings across the province are flying at half-mast to recognize her years of public service. Lathlin made history in 2015 as the first First Nations woman elected to the provincial legislature, representing The Pas-Kameesak and surrounding northern communities.
The Kelsey School Division described her as a dedicated advocate who worked closely with local students and families. The division, which serves about 1,450 students in The Pas and surrounding areas, recognized her long-term partnership in supporting schools throughout the region.
Lathlin was known for supporting laws that helped sexual assault survivors and provided workplace leave for people who experienced a miscarriage. She also worked to open a homeless shelter in The Pas called Oscar’s Place, which was named in honour of her father.
Premier Wab Kinew recently led a tribute at the legislature where he sang an honour song and a flag was placed over her empty seat. A book of condolences is open at the Legislative Building for the public to sign daily until early April.
